Advent; a lions roar

For English translation: scroll down!

“Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke.” Revelation 10:1-3

And he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion …

The lion, the king of animals. Residents of areas where lions are active know that these animals cannot be fooled around with. The lion also appeared in ancient Israel, so the Bible authors knew what they were talking about when comparing something or someone with a lion.

The image of the lion is used in many ways in the Bible. It’s described as awesome but also as instilling fear. The lionserves as a symbol for kingship (for ex. 2 Chron 9). But can also stand for death and destruction (for ex. Psalm 22, Ez 22). The lion’s roar contains something that can be considered majestic, frightening and impressive.

In real life, a lion roars out of a territorial feeling. By making his voice echo, he lets other lions know that he is around. His position becomes clear. At the same time it’s also a warning. Because with the power of his roar, he also wants to make clear how powerful and mighty he is; there is no denying him! Anyone who listens to his roar should think twice before walking further into his territory. Most lions roar most often in the morning when the sun rises. That’s the time they become the most active.

When Jesus, the lion of Judah, returns, clouds may robe him but His sunny light will shine so fiercely that a rainbow of hope will appear through those clouds. The evil will be consumed and Jesus will take over his dominion; on the one hand (foot) he will let be known who it is who rules thewaters, and on the other hand (foot) he will show that his territory also extends to everything on and in the land.

And He will roar like a lion. He will let everyone know that his time of action has come, just like a lion. By His voice He will show no one is able to mock with Him. His voice will demand recognition. Will be full of glory and power. His voice will announce his rule. (also read Psalm 29)

Advent. When we remember Jesus, coming as a baby, we may at the same time look forward to the day that He will return and roar lion.
